A gas safety guide for checking appliances

It’s vital that you use registered professionals to perform the installation and maintenance of LPG appliances and cylinders. Used per safety guidelines, LPG is a reliable alternative to other fuels.

Safety tips to follow:

General safety

  • Always consult the manual for specific tips
  • Regularly service LPG appliances and fittings
  • Appliances should be serviced by licensed LPG installers or service companies only
  • Check appliances regularly for deterioration in performance, signs of corrosion and minor leaks
  • Ensure the area is well-ventilated for appliances
  • Don’t detach cylinders, regulators or connections while appliance is in use
  • Don’t leave appliances unattended while in use
  • Ensure the gas supply is turned off at the cylinder after use

Refilling cylinder

  • Check that your cylinder is correctly filled or exchanged in time
  • When exchanging cylinders, ensure the replacement has been legally and safely filled by checking that there is a shrink-wrapped seal covering the cylinder valve
  • Don’t accept cylinders with no seal or if the seal is clear with no writing or branding
  • If the seal only has the words LPG or LPGas printed on it, do not accept the cylinder
  • The only acceptable seal has the same branding on the seal as is on the body of the cylinder

Connecting a cylinder

  • Ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area
  • Roll-about heaters are connected to the cylinder via an orange hose and a regulator. Always ensure that the cylinder valve is closed before loosening/removing the regulator
  • Ensure the rubber seal is located on the end of the regulator and is in good condition
  • A damaged seal is a prime cause of gas leaks

Gas leaks

  • Once the regulator is connected to the cylinder valve, open the valve one and a half turns only
  • Before igniting the heater, wait a minute to see if there are smells of gas
  • If there is, immediately close the valve and take the cylinder and heater to an LPG dealer
  • Check for a leak by applying a soapy water solution on all joints. The solution will create bubbles if the gas is leaking
  • Lift the gas cylinder into the housing behind the heater and close the housing panel
  • The cylinder should always be in the back space of the heater to prevent being knocked over
  • Ensure the cylinder is the correct size for the heater
  • Ensure there is no combustible material close to the heater
